To get where we’re going, we’ve got to know where we’re coming from.

The only way to improve upon our technique and repertoire is to be honest with ourselves about the areas that might be lacking. If my high range is worrisome and inconsistent, but my low range is super impressive, I better be working a lot more on my high range! This is common sense but—especially leading up to an audition —we can easily get wrapped up in tackling the repertoire and finding tricks and gimmicks to get around shoddy technique. This is not sustainable and—even if it miraculously wins you the audition—it will make playing the job a nightmare.
